The Only Person In My Family Who Ever Saw Me Without A Comparison Attached Left Me A Letter For This2

My father suddenly had nothing to say. He tried the word “manipulated” once more, but Ashby turned the letter toward him. There was the date, Adelaide’s signature, and the notary seal. Every detail made one thing undeniable: she had known exactly what she was doing and had planned for this very accusation.

I never divided the inheritance. Adelaide’s final line specifically told me not to. She asked me to build the meaningful life she had always told me was possible, even if it looked different from the life my family expected. So I kept the house. More importantly, I stopped making myself constantly available to people who had only valued what I could provide.

Seraphina and I no longer speak. She had her baby that autumn, while my mother continued sending holiday messages that I usually read without answering. My father hasn’t spoken to me in three years. Oddly enough, his silence is easier to live with than the angry voicemails he once left.

I moved into Adelaide’s house the following spring. Her old postcards sit safely in a box on the kitchen shelf, and the animal shelter eventually named a room after her. For most of my life, my family measured me against my sister and decided I was lesser because I was different. Adelaide never did that. She looked at me clearly, understood exactly who I was, and left behind proof that nobody could rewrite. I wasn’t the daughter who had somehow been manipulated into being chosen. I was simply the daughter one woman finally saw—and she made sure I would never forget it.
