Seven Years Of Being Introduced As His Wife Before Anybody Bothered To Mention I Had A Name Of My Own2

The divorce lasted ten months. Throughout it, Marcus kept trying to convince me that what happened at the dinner table had nothing to do with my work. I never argued. The documents spoke for themselves. The intellectual property belonged to me, and when the divorce was finalized, I retained complete ownership of the platform.

Then I did something Everett never expected. I licensed the software to three direct competitors of Campbell Realty. Watching his company scramble without the system was more satisfying than any angry speech could have been. Within weeks, the people who had treated me like an insignificant outsider were forced to confront just how much of their success had depended on work they had never bothered to credit.

Delphine contacted me last year about a new venture. She asked whether I might offer a “family rate.” I read the message, set the phone down, and never responded. It wasn’t revenge. I simply had no reason to keep giving special treatment to people who had spent years making me feel disposable.

I run my own firm now, with eleven employees and my name proudly displayed on the door. Clients learn who I am before they learn anything else about the company. Priya still saves me a corner table at Silverwood Terrace, and sometimes I sit there alone, completely by choice. For seven years, they treated me as the outsider, the wife, the replaceable name in a reservation system. What they never understood was that I wasn’t standing outside their success. I was holding it up. The night they left a chair empty for me was the night I stopped waiting to be invited to their table—and built one of my own.
