My Wife Was Pulled Over for Speeding Expecting Nothing More

Red and blue lights flickered across our Honda as my wife, Sarah, sat behind the wheel. She had been driving seventy-eight in a sixty-five, expecting nothing more than a speeding ticket. Trooper Martinez took her license and registration, then returned to his cruiser. Minutes passed before he finally came back. Instead of speaking to Sarah, he leaned toward my window and asked me to step outside. Once we were several feet from the car, his expression changed. “Don’t go home tonight,” he said quietly. “Find somewhere safe. Somewhere she doesn’t know about.””

 

 

 

I stared at him, certain I had misunderstood. Martinez slipped a folded note into my hand. “Read this alone,” he whispered. Inside were seven words: She isn’t who she says she is. Beneath them was a detective’s number. That night, while Sarah stayed at her mother’s, I called it. Detective Adam Reynolds told me she had been under surveillance for eight months—and then revealed the secret that changed everything.
