One Saturday Morning, Six Children Under Eleven, And A Man Who Could Not Spare Me Thirty Minutes2

He didn’t handle it well at first, but that isn’t a victory. It was simply the beginning of something he had refused to see. He called me eight times on Monday. I answered the fourth call, expecting anger, excuses, or another argument. Instead, his voice was quiet. He didn’t ask when I was coming home. He asked how his mother managed the mornings with six children.”’

That question told me more than any apology could have. He was finally looking at the work instead of assuming it happened by itself. We have spent the last twenty months trying to rebuild our marriage around that realization. He still works the same job and leaves at six. He handles bedtime four nights a week. His golf clubs remain in the garage, and now he plays about once a month and asks me first. In eleven years, he had never thought he needed to.

We went to counseling for a year. It wasn’t easy, and there were two months when I honestly believed our marriage was over. But gradually, things changed. I started leaving the house every Thursday for choir. I’m not particularly good at singing, and I don’t care. For one evening each week, I get to be a woman who isn’t somebody’s mother, wife, driver, cook, cleaner, or emergency contact. Rosalind takes the little ones on Sundays now, and strangely enough, she and I talk more than she and her son do.

He once told me I wasn’t any fun anymore. He was right. What he never understood was that the fun hadn’t disappeared. It had been spent, piece by piece, every single day on him and on the six children we created together. I stopped waiting for someone to notice how much I was carrying. I simply set it down. And the moment I did, everyone in that house finally understood the weight they had been expecting me to carry alone.
