Shattered At The Gas Station

The day they abandoned me in the desert was supposed to destroy me. They laughed while cameras recorded everything, turning my fear into entertainment. I had no water, no phone, and no one willing to help. To them, I wasn’t a wife anymore. I was simply “content.” I could have stayed there on that scorching curb, waiting for the heat to finish what they had started. Instead, I stood up, raised my thumb, and took the first ride that stopped.

 

 

 

That ride carried me farther than I expected, into a small town where my life slowly became mine again. Aunt May gave me somewhere safe to stay, and Martha’s Diner gave me something I hadn’t realized I needed: ordinary kindness without a price attached. A refill came without demands. Questions were asked, and people actually waited for my answers. Then Grant arrived—bloody, exhausted, and refusing to give up—and reminded me that survival isn’t something you’re simply born with. Sometimes, it’s a choice you make one moment at a time.
