I Called My Brother Selfish for Not Helping My Kids

I never expected grief to arrive with paperwork. When Mom died, my brother and I each inherited $90,000. He immediately said he was saving his share. I wished I could do the same, but with five children, bills, school fees, clothes, and medical expenses, every dollar felt necessary. Within months, my inheritance was gone. When another round of school fees arrived, panic took over, and I called my brother for help. “The kids need it more than you do,” I told him. He quietly said that wasn’t what he had planned for Mom’s money.

 

 

 

I exploded. I called him selfish and reminded him that his nieces and nephews were struggling. He hung up. Days became weeks without a response, and eventually my frustration spilled over in front of my children. “Your uncle refused to help us,” I told them, instantly regretting it. Two weeks later, my oldest daughter walked into my room holding an envelope. “It’s from Uncle,” she said. Inside was a bank statement showing five separate college funds—$15,000 for each child. Then I saw the condition attached to them.
