Three Flights Of Stairs Every Single Day Because Somebody Decided Certain People Should Not Share A Lift2

That silence told me everything I needed to know about the fifteen years I had spent beside him. He knew exactly who I was. He simply had no idea that the woman standing in front of him was about to become his superior. I walked past him, took the elevator to the tenth floor, entered the boardroom, and opened the meeting as the company’s incoming chief executive. The room went completely still. Nobody laughed this time. Nobody asked whether I belonged there.

By noon, the executive-elevator restriction had been removed from the company’s conduct policy. But that was only the beginning. My first internal audit uncovered three years of unauthorized client-entertainment approvals signed by Baek Yerin under authority she had never been given. One of the expenses was connected to the very watch she had been wearing that morning. The investigation widened quickly, and within two weeks Baek was gone. The woman she had mocked, Song Boram, was promoted into operations after it became clear she had quietly protected employees for years.

Doyun did not wait for the final review. He resigned from the board rather than sit through an investigation that would expose everything he had hidden. Our marriage ended seven months later. There was no dramatic confrontation and no speech that could repair fifteen years of being treated as someone whose value depended on who stood beside her. The divorce papers felt strangely ordinary compared with the realization that I had already left the marriage emotionally the moment he refused to acknowledge me in that hallway.

The watch was returned to his mother. She wears it every day and calls me every Sunday. She never apologizes for her son because she understands that his choices are not hers to answer for. As for Boram, she still runs operations, and I still remember that she was the only person in that corridor who helped someone she believed was nobody. That morning, they spent minutes deciding what I was worth without asking me a single question. I stopped needing their verdict the moment I realized I had never been waiting for it.
