The courtroom was silent except for the buzz of fluorescent lights. Eight months pregnant, Emma Caldwell stood beside her attorney, prepared to surrender the house, savings, cars, and business shares just to escape Daniel. Across the aisle, Daniel sat beside Vanessa Price, the woman he had brought into Emma’s home while she attended prenatal appointments. Vanessa smiled as though she had already won. Emma only wanted her baby and a life far away from the man who had convinced her she was unstable and forgetful.
Then Judge Whitaker revealed something unexpected. Before the hearing, a little girl had approached her in the hallway, crying and clutching a stuffed rabbit. When the courtroom doors opened, Emma recognized six-year-old Lily, Daniel’s daughter. Lily had been kept away from the hearing, or so Emma had been told. She walked forward trembling, then whispered, “I’m sorry for not telling sooner.” When Emma asked what she meant, Lily looked directly at Vanessa and said, “She said if I told, Daddy would send me away.”
