A Sheet Cake With His Name On It And A Banner Sagging Over The Fireplace Before I Even Took My Coat Off

They were already applauding when I walked through the door. My brother sat in my father’s recliner with a beer in one hand and a folder balanced on his knee, proudly announcing that he had sold my little house for $410,000. My mother whispered that they were proud of how quietly he had handled everything. My father insisted that homeownership was overwhelming and Colby had simply stepped in before things became worse.

 

 

 

Then I saw the power of attorney. The signature looked perfect—far smoother than mine had ever been. Colby claimed I had signed it in my kitchen the day before I left. I told him I had left from my office. He blinked once, and that tiny reaction told me everything I needed to know. Before anyone could say another word, the buyers’ attorney called, asking why police officers were standing inside his office.

The answer was simple. Eleven days earlier, six thousand miles away, I had received a deed alert at my work address. I had reported the suspected forgery immediately. By the time Colby celebrated his supposed sale, investigators already had the forged document, the notary, and the recording receipt. And my family was about to discover exactly what I did for a living.
