Sparked An Unforgettable Holiday Family Exile…

For three years, my husband’s mother, Gene, treated my seven-year-old daughter, Holly, like an outsider. Every Christmas, she filled the other grandchildren’s hands with expensive tablets and envelopes of cash, then gave Holly something cheap and impersonal. This year, it was a drugstore candle in a flimsy bag. The worst part was the handwritten tag calling her merely “Brandon’s girl.” The room went silent. My husband, Brandon, looked furious, but Gene kept smiling as if nothing had happened. Later, I found Holly alone in the guest room, still wearing her wrinkled gold dress and staring at the cruel tag.

 

 

 

Brandon knelt beside her and told her that no label could change the fact that she was his daughter. Then he reached into her overnight bag and pulled out a small red velvet jewelry box. He explained that he had prepared it for exactly this kind of situation. If Gene ever made Holly feel excluded or unwanted again, Holly would decide when to give her the box to Gene. The next morning, at Gene’s Boxing Day brunch, the insult happened again. Every relative had a proper place card except Holly. Her card simply said “Guest.” Holly quietly reached into her purse and wrapped her fingers around the velvet box…
