The Real Reason Your $20 Bill Has a Bow-and-Arrow Symbol

Most people barely notice the cash they carry. They check the denomination, fold the bill, and move on. But occasionally, a dollar seems different because of a tiny symbol stamped near the portrait or along its edge. Some look like arrows, circles, stars, initials, or even a small bow and arrow. At first, these strange markings can appear suspicious, as though someone has damaged the bill or left behind a secret message.

 

 

 

But these marks have a fascinating history. They are often called chop marks, and they are connected to the way money was verified as it traveled through international markets. The tradition goes back centuries, when merchants used stamped symbols on silver coins after examining their weight and purity. Each mark offered another sign of trust. Eventually, similar markings appeared on paper currency, especially American dollars, as they circulated far beyond the United States. And one particular symbol became especially mysterious.
