Two Hundred Acres Of Rock And Broken Fencing That Everybody At The Diner Agreed Was Not Worth Buying

He placed the papers on my porch rail and told me to sign. My mother stood beside the SUV, studying the mud on my jeans as though it proved everything she had always believed about me. Desmond called the deal “saving me.” His company’s debt was collapsing, and without asking, he had listed my farm as secondary collateral. The bank was calling the loan, while the transfer document valued my two hundred acres at just fifteen thousand dollars. He tapped the signature line and told me I should be grateful.

 

 

 

What they never understood was what that land actually meant. Three years earlier, I had spent months studying development maps, water-access records, and transmission-corridor filings. Then I sold everything I owned and bought Thistledown Ridge outright. To everyone else, it was rusted fencing, a collapsing porch, and muddy ground. To me, it was something entirely different. I let Desmond photograph me from his sports car and let my mother hand me an envelope cutting me out of her estate. Then I watched them drive away.
