A Woman Made Fun of My 83 Year Old Mom at Checkout Then the Cashier Locked Her Register and Said, Nobody Leaves

My mother, Margaret, was 83, but she refused to let age decide what she could still do. That Saturday, she insisted on doing her own grocery shopping. The store was crowded, and by the time she reached the checkout, her trembling hands struggled to find her wallet. The woman behind us sighed loudly. “Oh, come on.” Then she pushed her overflowing cart forward and sneered, “If you’re too old to shop, maybe you should stay home.” Several people turned to stare. I stepped forward angrily, but Mom gently touched my arm and whispered that it was all right.

 

 

 

After finally finding her wallet, Mom handed her card to the cashier. The woman laughed again. “Unbelievable. We’re all waiting for this?” But the cashier suddenly stopped moving. She stared at Mom’s face for several seconds before quietly asking, “What’s your name?” Mom looked confused. “Margaret.” The cashier reached beneath the counter. Click. She locked the register and stopped the conveyor belt. “Nobody leaves.” Then she called the manager.
