Ethan Brooks sat in the third row by the windows at Ridgeline High, wearing secondhand sneakers and speaking only when necessary. During Heroes Week, the classrooms filled with paper flags and stories about bravery. One student brought a firefighter helmet. Another made a slideshow about an uncle. “My hero is my mother,” he said. “Rebecca Brooks. United States Air Force. F-22 pilot.” Laughter immediately spread from the windows across the room. Mr. Dalton gave him a knowing smile and suggested he stick to believable stories. Someone made airplane noises. Someone joked that his father was Batman. Ethan’s face burned, but he didn’t argue. The photograph showed his mother standing beside a gray fighter jet, wearing her flight suit and dark glasses. Every word Ethan had written was true. But by lunch, the entire school had turned his hero into a joke. Then that afternoon, nearly a thousand students gathered in the auditorium.
