Saturday Coffee Met a Plan That Was Never Asked

Chelsea walked into my kitchen on a Saturday morning while I poured water over coffee grounds and casually announced that Mackenzie and Delaney were moving in that very day. They would live here rent-free until they got back on their feet, she said. Brandon stood beside the refrigerator, staring at the floor instead of looking at me. My name is Helen. I’m sixty-four, and Gerald and I bought this three-bedroom house in a quiet Ohio suburb when Brandon was still a child. We spent thirty years paying it off, and Gerald always called the backyard our retirement kingdom.

 

 

Brandon and Chelsea had already been staying with me for a year after promising it would only be six months. They paid nothing, rarely bought groceries, ran up the utilities, and even placed subscriptions on my card. When I asked where their friends would sleep, Chelsea smiled and said they needed my larger bedroom and private bathroom. I could take the couch. Brandon muttered that it was temporary. Chelsea poured my creamer into her travel cup and said, “Family helps people.” I looked at them both, then quietly said all right. But when they left for brunch to celebrate their new living arrangement, I made a decision they weren’t expecting.
