A Printed Invoice On The Dining Table Ended Twenty Nine Years Of Something I Had Mistaken For Love And Belonging

The invoice sat in the middle of the polished table like evidence at a trial: $3,200 for an Audi transmission that was never my responsibility. My mother slammed her hand against the table while Bianca cried on cue, claiming she couldn’t afford it after spending her entire paycheck in San Diego. My father called it family duty. Then my mother gave me the ultimatum: transfer the money to Bianca immediately, or pack my things and become dead to them.

 

 

Everyone waited for the collapse they had seen so many times before. But this time, I simply pushed my chair back and said I was done. I grabbed my coat and walked out.
