I set the ring down and looked directly at Ryan. “That saves me from wondering whether to sell this to recover the wedding deposits you never planned to pay.” The room went completely silent. Ryan immediately jumped to his feet, insisting that I had misunderstood. But I shook my head. “No. I finally understood.”
Then I reminded everyone at the table who had actually paid for our trips, dinners, lake house weekends, and wedding expenses. One by one, the uncomfortable truth became impossible to hide. Everyone already knew I had been carrying Ryan financially for years. He had simply counted on me continuing to do it without ever questioning him.
