Have you ever woken up at exactly the same time every night and wondered why it keeps happening? You glance at the clock, notice the same numbers, and suddenly feel as though your body is trying to tell you something. Modern sleep science connects repeated waking with many factors, including stress, sleep habits, room temperature, caffeine, alcohol, and certain health conditions. But traditional practices offer another way of understanding these nighttime patterns. Traditional Chinese Medicine, or TCM, describes a concept called the “body clock,” which connects different periods of the day with specific organs and emotional themes. Although this is a traditional belief rather than established medical science, many people use it as a tool for reflection and mindfulness.
According to TCM, different waking hours are believed to carry different meanings. If you repeatedly wake during the night, the time on your clock may seem surprisingly specific. And one particular window, between 1:00 and 3:00 a.m., has traditionally been associated with something many people struggle to recognize.
