Ryan didn’t answer the officer. He stared at his shoes, then glanced at his mother as the silence grew longer. Denise’s confident expression slowly began to disappear, so I answered for him. “Officer Delgado, I own this house. It’s titled solely in my name. I bought it before Ryan and I were married, and his name has never been on the deed.” Denise immediately turned toward me. “That’s not true. Ryan provides for this family.”
I calmly told the officer that I had the deed, mortgage statements, and tax records inside. Then Officer Delgado looked directly at Ryan. “Sir, is your name on the title?” Ryan had nowhere left to hide. In front of his mother, his sister, and the police officer, he finally whispered, “No. It’s Vanessa’s house.” Denise froze. Nicole lowered her phone.
