“Is this Rosalind Pierre?” the officer asked. My throat went dry. He explained that my mother had called the police the night before, claiming I had stormed away from dinner and might be a danger to myself. My heart pounded. I had simply walked out, driven home, and gone to bed. Somehow, my family had turned my decision to leave into an emergency.
Then the officer mentioned something else. My mother had complained about my “sudden refusal to help the family” and reminded them that I had been the primary caregiver for my nieces and nephews. I closed my eyes. This wasn’t really about my safety. They wanted to force me back into the role I had finally refused. But then the officer lowered his voice. “There’s one more part of the report,” he said. “It involves something your father claimed.” I sat upright in bed. “It’s about money.”
