Are they that bad?2

Within minutes, the kitchen became a battlefield. One person peeled and boiled fresh potatoes while another quietly prepared the instant version in a separate bowl. Butter was added. Warm milk was stirred in. Salt, pepper, and even a little garlic were used to make both sides as delicious as possible. Everyone waited nervously while the bowls were placed on the table without labels.

The first person took a bite, thinking the answer would be obvious. Then came another bite. Faces changed. Opinions softened. Some immediately chose the homemade potatoes, praising their richer texture and familiar taste. Others were shocked to discover that the creamy bowl they loved had come from a box.

The room exploded with laughter when the final votes were counted. There was no overwhelming winner. The homemade version won by only a single vote. The person who had defended instant potatoes raised both hands in defeat, then smiled and said, “Fine. But tell me again which one took five minutes.”

That was when everyone finally understood the argument had never truly been about potatoes. Homemade mash was about tradition, patience, and the memories created while making it. Instant mash was about surviving busy days and still putting something warm on the table. In the end, both bowls were completely empty, and the family agreed on one thing: the best mashed potatoes were simply the ones shared together.
