The notifications were declined-payment alerts, one after another, for every account I had just stopped funding. Bethany’s overdue balances, hidden credit cards, personal loan, and car insurance suddenly appeared on the screen in front of the husband who had never known any of it existed. She stared at the phone, then looked at me, her wine forgotten.
“What did you do?” she whispered.
“I stopped making your financial problems my responsibility,” I said calmly, using her own words against her. Trevor stepped closer and read the alerts over her shoulder. His expression changed from confusion to suspicion. “Bethany, why did that transfer fail? What account has been paying your credit cards?” The kitchen fell completely silent. Twenty-three relatives watched as the question Bethany had avoided for four years finally came from the one person she could no longer deceive.
