I watched Hannah drink from the glass she believed was mine. She took a committed sip, playing the relaxed, innocent daughter beside her unpredictable father. Across the table, Colin watched me carefully, waiting for the sedative to take effect. He seemed ready for slurred words, confusion, and the spectacle of a wealthy old man suddenly losing control in a crowded restaurant.
But then Hannah’s expression changed. She blinked slowly and touched her temple. “I feel a little…” she began before stopping. Colin leaned closer, and I saw the instant he understood. His eyes jumped toward my untouched glass and then back to his wife. The confidence drained from his face.
“Something wrong?” I asked calmly. Hannah stared at me, finally realizing the two glasses had been switched—and that her own plan was now moving through her bloodstream.
I immediately called the server and asked for medical assistance.
