The 4-7-8 breathing technique is a simple relaxation exercise often associated with Dr. Andrew Weil. It involves breathing in for 4 counts, holding the breath for 7 counts, and slowly breathing out for 8 counts. The method is commonly used to promote relaxation, manage stress, and make it easier to settle down before sleep.
To perform it, sit or lie in a comfortable position. Place the tip of your tongue just behind your upper front teeth. First, breathe out completely through your mouth. Then inhale quietly through your nose for a count of 4, hold your breath for 7, and exhale slowly through your mouth for a count of 8. That completes one cycle.
Beginners can start with four cycles. The important part is maintaining a comfortable rhythm rather than forcing yourself to count slowly. If holding your breath for seven seconds feels uncomfortable, adjust the pace and gradually become more familiar with the exercise.
