The smell of paint stopped me in the nursery doorway three days after my emergency C-section. I had spent months imagining Olivia coming home to cream-colored walls covered with the tiny wildflowers I had painted during pregnancy. Instead, thick black paint covered the room. Stephen froze behind me. Patricia finally explained that Olivia did not need a special nursery because she was not the male heir the family expected. They could always try again for a boy, she said.
