Why Does Your Nail Clipper Have a Little Round Hole?2

During the late nineteenth century, nail clippers and similar grooming tools were becoming increasingly common. Before that period, personal grooming implements could be considered luxury possessions. As their popularity grew, people wanted them to be portable and easy to keep nearby. The small hole made that possible, allowing clippers to be attached to chains or decorative holders known as chatelaines.

The idea was especially useful when grooming tools were carried alongside other personal items. Much like pocket watches, clippers could be kept attached rather than loose in a pocket or bag. This reduced the chance of losing them and ensured they were available whenever needed. A tiny opening therefore solved a surprisingly practical problem.

As manufacturing techniques improved, nail clippers became more versatile. Some designs incorporated nail files, bottle openers, and other tools, but the small attachment hole continued to appear. Its survival was not necessarily because it was fashionable, but because the feature remained useful. Good product design often works this way: a feature survives because people continue finding value in it.

So the next time you hold a pair of nail clippers, look closely at that little hole in the lever. It is more than an empty space or a decorative detail. It helps make the tool portable, easier to organize, and potentially easier to grip. What seems like an insignificant part of an everyday object is actually a small example of thoughtful design that has remained useful across generations.
