I wrapped Grandma in a blanket, helped her into my car, and drove straight to the nearest hospital instead of beginning the nine-hour trip home. Before taking her anywhere, I needed a doctor with no connection to my father or the care facility to examine her. The emergency physician studied her medication records, then slowly set down his clipboard.
“Your grandmother isn’t confused because of dementia,” he said carefully. “She’s heavily overmedicated.” Suddenly, everything made sense: her vacant stare, slurred words, and the way she barely seemed aware of her surroundings. Someone had been keeping her sedated. I thought about the money disappearing from her accounts and the expensive vacations my father and sister had taken. Then my phone buzzed.
