When my twenty-year-old daughter Hannah disappeared during her summer trip, I thought something terrible had happened. She had stopped answering my calls, and when I finally tracked her down, she was at a resort hundreds of miles away with a baby I had never seen before. The baby was named Grace, and Hannah kept saying, “She’s safe with me.” I was furious and terrified. I demanded to know where the child’s mother was, why Hannah had taken her, and why nobody had called me. Hannah wouldn’t give me the answers I wanted. Instead, she kept insisting that she had done what she had to do. I feared my daughter had made a reckless decision that could ruin both their lives.
Then, in the resort parking lot, Hannah opened the diaper bag and pulled out a thick folder. She placed it on the hood of the car and looked directly at me. Her hands were trembling, but her voice wasn’t. “I did call, Mom,” she said. “Everyone.” She opened the folder and showed me the first page. It was a notarized letter signed by a teenage girl named Marisol. Then Hannah said the words that changed everything: “She left Grace with me because she wanted me to be her mother.”
