The One Line in Paragraph Nine She Never Read Decided Everything About That Deposit

Kaitlyn’s voice died in her throat, so I finished the sentence for her from memory. I had read the contract so many times I could recite it without looking.

“In the event of cancellation by the account holder, the deposit of twelve thousand dollars shall be refunded in full, less a processing fee, provided notice is given more than ten days before the event.”

 

 

I folded my hands. “I gave notice on the eleventh day, Kaitlyn. One day inside the window. The money comes back to me. All of it.”

Mason looked at me desperately. “Grandma, please. The wedding is in eleven days. We have nowhere—”

Before he could finish, someone knocked on my door.

When I opened it, Diane stood there holding a manila envelope. Beside her was a woman I had never seen before, dressed in a crisp blazer and carrying a leather portfolio.

Diane smiled kindly.

“Mrs. Voss,” she said, “I brought your refund confirmation. And I brought someone who very much wants the June 20th date.”

Mason and Kaitlyn turned toward the stranger.

Neither of them knew what was about to happen.
