Governor Gavin Newsom warned that California would sue the Trump administration if National Guard troops are sent to San Francisco. His comments came after Trump announced plans to deploy troops to several major U.S. cities to address crime and immigration concerns. Newsom called the proposal unconstitutional and vowed immediate legal action.
The governor accused Trump of misrepresenting California’s public safety situation, emphasizing that San Francisco’s crime rates, including homicides, have declined. Mayor Daniel Lurie echoed this stance, asserting that National Guard forces cannot arrest criminals and would not improve safety.
Both state and local leaders framed the issue as a matter of state sovereignty and rule of law. They argued that any federal deployment without consent represents executive overreach. Newsom said California would continue defending its people and values against what he described as authoritarian interference.
