Mr. Caldwell looked up from his desk as I explained why I had come. Years earlier, Walter and I had listed both our names on the community’s emergency and property access file. After Walter passed away, I never thought to update it. Somewhere along the way, however, my daughter-in-law Melissa had managed to add herself as a secondary contact, supposedly to “help with Mom’s house.”
I asked Mr. Caldwell to remove every name except mine and make it clear that no one could authorize work on my home without my written permission. As he reviewed the records, his expression suddenly changed. Then he turned the computer screen toward me.
Three days earlier, someone had filed a permit request for a complete kitchen renovation at my address.
My name was at the top.
Melissa’s name was at the bottom.
The renovation was scheduled to begin the following week.
Suddenly, I understood why she had been measuring my kitchen that afternoon.
She had never come to ask.
She had come because she already believed she had permission.
