When my daughter Lila was born, I expected Marcus to be overwhelmed with happiness. Instead, he looked at her, then at me, with a suspicion I couldn’t understand. A few days later, he asked whether I was certain the baby was his. The question shattered something inside me. I had been faithful throughout our marriage, and there had never been a reason for him to doubt me. After childbirth, while I was exhausted and struggling to care for our newborn, Marcus became distant. Eventually, he left the house, saying he needed time to think. My sister Naomi became my greatest support. She cooked, cleaned, helped with Lila, and reminded me repeatedly that Marcus’s suspicion was not my fault. Then his mother called. Her words were colder than anything Marcus had said. She warned me that if the baby wasn’t Marcus’s, I would leave the marriage with nothing. I hung up and stared at my sleeping daughter, realizing his family had already decided who they believed.
When the paternity results finally arrived, I opened the envelope with Naomi beside me. The answer was exactly what I had always known: Lila was Marcus’s daughter. When Marcus came to hear the result, I expected relief. Instead, he became angry when I didn’t immediately celebrate with him. I told him about his mother’s threats and reminded him that he had abandoned me immediately after our daughter was born. He insisted he hadn’t known what his mother had said. Maybe that was true, but the damage was already done. A few days later, Marcus returned, apologized, and begged me to give our marriage another chance. He said his insecurity had destroyed his judgment and promised he would change. Against my better instincts, I agreed, mostly because I wanted Lila to have both parents. For a short time, I believed we might repair what had been broken. Then Marcus began acting strangely, guarding his phone and becoming secretive whenever I entered the room. One night, while he slept, I saw a message appear from a woman at his workplace.
