When I first saw the small bungalow, I couldn’t understand why it was so cheap. The property sat beside a quiet creek, surrounded by mature trees and several acres of untouched land. The house needed work, but nothing seemed serious enough to explain the unusually low asking price. The realtor told me the previous owner had been an older man who rarely spoke with neighbors and had left the property years earlier. Most buyers wanted something more modern, so they had overlooked the place. I wasn’t looking for luxury. I wanted somewhere peaceful where I could escape after long weeks of work, and the cabin felt strangely perfect. I walked through the rooms, imagining a repaired porch, a small garden, and solar panels on the roof. Before making an offer, I decided to explore the property one more time.
I followed the creek through the trees and found an overgrown section I hadn’t noticed during my first visit. Several branches had fallen across a narrow path, and weeds covered what looked like the remains of an old garden. Then I saw a wooden bench facing the water. Beneath it sat a small metal container almost completely hidden beneath leaves, rust, and dirt. I nearly walked past it, assuming it was abandoned junk. But something about the way the box had been positioned made me stop. After clearing away the branches, I noticed a faded name carved into the wood beside the bench. I remembered the realtor’s vague description of the previous owner and suddenly wondered whether this quiet property had a history nobody had bothered to investigate. I knelt beside the container and began brushing away the dirt. When I finally opened it, I found several handwritten notebooks wrapped carefully in plastic.
