After seven years together, I went into our Valentine’s dinner believing the night might change my life. My boyfriend had planned everything carefully. The restaurant was beautiful, the atmosphere felt romantic, and we spent the evening talking about our relationship, our memories, and the future we had supposedly been building together.
By the time dessert arrived, I was almost certain he was going to propose. I kept wondering whether he had a ring hidden somewhere. But when the bill arrived, he casually suggested that we split it equally. I was surprised, not because I couldn’t afford it, but because the request felt strange after such an intentionally romantic evening.
A brief argument followed. Before we could resolve it, he suddenly paid the bill, stood up, and walked out of the restaurant, leaving me sitting there alone and completely confused. Then, a few minutes later, the server approached my table and handed me an envelope with my name on it.
