I Woke Up Thinking Something Was Crawling on Me—The Morning Revealed a Surprisingly Simple Answer2

We searched the kitchen first, looking for anything that might explain the strange object. At that point, everyone had different theories. Maybe something had broken, an animal had carried something into the room, or some forgotten object had somehow found its way onto the bed. But none of the possibilities seemed convincing.

Then we found the answer. The strange object wasn’t an insect, an animal, or anything dangerous. It was a small, dried piece of cooked chicken. Somehow, a scrap of food had ended up on the bed and become lodged against my back. Once we realized what it was, the rough, hardened texture suddenly made perfect sense. The terrifying mystery had turned out to be nothing more than a piece of leftover food in the wrong place.

For a few seconds, nobody said anything. Then everyone started laughing. Just minutes earlier, we had been convinced something strange was crawling on me. My heart had been racing, and my imagination had turned a harmless sensation into something frightening. The sensation itself had been completely real—I really had felt something against my skin. What had been wrong was the explanation my half-asleep brain had created for it.

Looking back, the experience reminded me how differently the mind works when we wake suddenly in darkness. Without enough information, the brain tries to fill in the gaps, and fear can make the most dramatic explanation feel like the obvious one. A strange sound can become an intruder, a shadow can become a person, and a piece of dried chicken can somehow become a creature crawling across your back.

By morning, the whole family was still joking about it. The mystery had been solved, and there had never been any real danger. What began as a frightening nighttime experience ended with nothing more than laughter and a lesson I wouldn’t forget: sometimes the scariest things in the dark are completely ordinary once you turn on the light.
