Why Some Dogs Wear Blue Vests, Bandanas, or Leashes2

Not every dog wearing blue is a service or therapy animal. Some owners simply choose blue because they like the color or think it looks attractive on their dog. Unlike certain officially recognized identification systems, a blue leash, vest, or bandana by itself doesn’t necessarily confirm a dog’s working status. That’s why it’s better not to make assumptions based solely on color. If a dog appears to be working, the most respectful approach is to give it space and avoid distracting it unless the handler invites interaction.

For dogs genuinely involved in service or therapy work, minimizing distractions can be especially important. Service dogs may need to concentrate on tasks that directly assist their handlers, while dogs in training are still learning how to behave appropriately in public environments. Approaching, calling to, feeding, or petting a working dog without permission can interrupt that training or prevent the animal from responding to an important task.

The same principle applies to dogs wearing other colored accessories. Different communities and organizations may use colors such as yellow or red to communicate particular messages, but these meanings aren’t necessarily universal either. A red collar, yellow ribbon, or blue bandana can have different purposes depending on the owner, organization, or local convention. When in doubt, don’t rely on color alone to determine what a dog needs.

So the next time you see a dog wearing blue, take a moment before reaching out. It could be a hardworking service animal, a therapy dog, a puppy learning an important job, or simply someone’s beloved pet wearing a favorite color. Whatever the reason, respecting the dog’s space is always a good choice. Behind some of those stylish accessories is a working animal that deserves concentration and respect—and behind others is simply an owner who thought their dog looked great in blue.
