Things You Should Absolutely Avoid Touching in Someone Else’s Home

I once opened a friend’s cabinet while searching for a glass of water and immediately regretted it. Inside were essential oils, tax records, and a very unexpected letter from a chiropractor. None of it was my business. I slammed the door shut and pretended I had seen nothing, but the guilt stayed with me. Being inside someone else’s home can feel like walking through a private museum. Everything looks ordinary, yet there are invisible rules you don’t always know.

 

 

 

Over time, I learned that being a good guest means knowing what not to touch. Personal drawers, medicine cabinets, valuables, electronics, refrigerators, bedrooms, pets, and artwork can all contain things that are private or sentimental. Even when someone says, “Make yourself at home,” that doesn’t necessarily mean opening everything you see. But there was one particular mistake I made at a dinner party that taught me the most important rule of all—and it began when I reached toward something that looked completely
