The Early Morning Phone Call That Finally Ended My Neighbor’s Driveway Games For Good 2

The removal truck backed carefully toward the silver Corsa. Two men checked the license plate against my documentation, photographed the vehicle blocking the marked private driveway, and prepared the hydraulic lift. I watched from my kitchen window with a coffee in my hand while my boys ate cereal at the table. Their school bags were packed, their shoes were already on, and for the first time in three weeks, there was nothing between us and the road. We were going to leave on time. The hydraulic machinery groaned, and almost immediately, Bernadette’s bedroom light switched on. Her door flew open seconds later. She came outside wearing a dressing gown and no shoes, shouting as she watched her precious Corsa rise from the driveway. She stormed toward me, demanding to know what I thought I was doing. I calmly reminded her that the vehicle was sitting on private property, that she had repeatedly refused to move it, and that the removal had been authorized according to the documentation I had provided. Her car would now be waiting at the company’s yard. She would have to pay the release fee and daily storage charges, just as I had spent nineteen mornings paying with late marks, rushed breakfasts, and work warnings.

Bernadette immediately threatened me with the police, solicitors, and the council. She shouted that she would make sure I regretted touching her car. I simply opened the folder I had prepared and handed her the first page. Inside were nineteen timestamped photographs, each clearly showing her Corsa positioned across the private driveway. Behind those photographs were copies of every written request, every message, and the authorization for the removal. I told her that if she wanted to call the police, I would be happy to provide them with the entire file. I would also explain why my five-year-old had cried on two mornings because he was afraid his teacher would mark him late again. That sentence changed something in Bernadette’s expression. For three weeks, she had believed the inconvenience was mine alone. She had assumed I would continue accepting it because confronting her seemed easier than fighting. Now she finally understood that I had not been powerless. I had simply been patient.

She stood there watching the truck disappear down the road with her car strapped securely onto the flatbed. Her anger slowly turned into embarrassment. She demanded to know why I had not warned her before arranging the removal. I reminded her that I had warned her nineteen times. There was nothing left to discuss. My boys finished breakfast, climbed into the car, and we drove straight out of the driveway. For the first time in weeks, we arrived at school early enough that neither child had to rush through the gate. My youngest looked at the clock, smiled, and proudly told me, “We’re not late today.” Those six words mattered more to me than anything Bernadette could have.
