The room went silent when my mother-in-law, Margaret, raised her glass at her sixtieth birthday party and smiled directly at me. “Here is my daughter-in-law… and her lottery ticket,” she announced, pointing at my eight-year-old son, Liam. Everyone understood the insult. She was suggesting that I had deliberately gotten pregnant to trap her younger son, Daniel, into marrying me. My face burned as Liam looked up at me innocently and asked, “Mommy, what’s a lottery ticket?” Before I could find an answer, Daniel pushed back his chair and stood. He looked at his mother with an expression I had never seen before. “Yes,” he said calmly. “And you are the reason I almost lost my family.” The room became completely still.
Daniel walked over and placed a hand on Liam’s shoulder. He told everyone that eight years earlier, when I had told him I was pregnant, he had been frightened and unsure whether he was ready to become a father. But I had never pressured him into marriage. I had told him that I would raise our child even if he chose to walk away. Daniel was the one who asked me to marry him. Margaret scoffed and claimed he had been too young to understand what he was doing. Daniel shook his head. “What I didn’t understand,” he said, “was how hard you would try to destroy our marriage.” Then he reached into his pocket and pulled out his phone. Margaret’s smile disappeared when she realized he had recovered the messages she had sent me years earlier.
