After two weeks, unplugging the microwave had saved approximately half a kilowatt-hour, which amounted to only a few cents. At an electricity rate of about 12 cents per kilowatt-hour, continuing the habit for an entire year would save only a little over $3.
The small savings came with several inconveniences. Each time I plugged the microwave back in, its clock had to be reset. The outlet was also difficult to reach, requiring me to move things around on the counter. The constant plugging and unplugging quickly became more annoying than the savings seemed worthwhile.
The experiment ultimately showed that unplugging a microwave does technically reduce electricity consumption, but the financial benefit is extremely small for most households. Rather than focusing on tiny standby loads, homeowners can usually save more by addressing larger energy users.
More effective strategies include using LED lighting, choosing energy-efficient appliances, adjusting thermostat settings, and using smart power strips to eliminate standby consumption from multiple devices at once.
The experience still made me more aware of how electricity is used throughout my home. While I probably will not unplug my microwave after every use, the experiment encouraged me to focus on larger and more practical ways to reduce household energy costs.
