I stepped out into the yard early in the morning, almost automatically, with my phone and a cup of coffee in my hands.2

They were earthworms—dozens, perhaps hundreds of them—gathered together after the rain. The sight was unsettling because I had never seen so many moving in one place. They were not some strange creature or hidden infestation emerging from beneath the ground. They were ordinary earthworms responding to conditions that had temporarily made the soil difficult for them. Their tangled bodies formed a living mass that shifted and pulsed as they moved across the wet surface. Once I understood what I was seeing, the mystery disappeared, but the image remained strangely difficult to forget.

The rain had saturated the ground, and the worms had apparently come to the surface because remaining underground had become uncomfortable or unsafe. Some were exposed to the open air, while others crawled over and around one another. What had looked like a single breathing organism was actually many individual creatures moving together. I had spent several minutes imagining something completely unnatural when the explanation was part of the ordinary world around me. The yard had not changed. My understanding of it had.

I watched the worms for a while instead of disturbing them. Eventually, as the ground became more suitable and the conditions changed, they dispersed. The strange heap slowly lost its shape until there was nothing left resembling the mysterious mass I had first discovered. I cleaned the area afterward, but I kept thinking about how quickly something familiar had become alien simply because I had never noticed it before. The experience reminded me that nature can look frightening when we encounter it without context.

Since that morning, I have never walked through my yard quite the same way. I look down more often and notice things I once ignored—tiny movements in the soil, insects beneath leaves, and evidence of life that is constantly happening beneath the surface. The worms were never dangerous, and they had not appeared to frighten anyone. They were simply responding to their environment. But that strange living knot under my window changed the way I see my surroundings. Sometimes the most unsettling discoveries are not monsters at all. They are ordinary pieces of nature that suddenly reveal how much life has been quietly moving beneath our feet all along.
