The Woman They Called A Plague Held The Deed To The House They Thought Was Theirs

Nathan’s hands shook as he read the document. It was a formal notice of sale. Because my name was first on both the mortgage and the deed, the house was legally mine to sell, and I had decided to list it. I was not doing it out of spite. I simply could no longer spend my retirement money supporting a home where the people living there called me a burden and lied about my generosity.

Vanessa immediately protested, insisting that it was their home. I calmly reminded her that my name was on the paperwork she had signed, even though she had never bothered to read it. Nathan then asked where they were supposed to go. For years, that question would have made me reach for my checkbook. This time, I told him that finding an answer was no longer my responsibility.

I explained the plan I had prepared with my attorney, Robert. I would sell the house and recover the money I had contributed through the down payment and mortgage payments, protecting the retirement savings I had nearly sacrificed. Any remaining equity would be divided with Nathan because he was my son, but the financial rescues would end.

There would be no more emergency payments, expensive gifts, or quietly funded projects. If Nathan and Vanessa wanted another home, they would have to qualify for one and pay for it themselves like other adults.
