When I was six, I had a habit of announcing things without realizing how adults might interpret them. One evening at dinner, I suddenly remembered something I had seen Grandma and Grandpa doing together. I thought it was completely normal, but for some reason, I decided it was important enough to tell everyone.
I looked around the table and announced that Grandma had a secret way of making Grandpa do something. My parents immediately stopped talking. Grandpa lowered his fork, and Grandma stared at me with an expression I had never seen before.
My mother asked me what I meant. I tried to explain, but the more questions she asked, the more confused everyone seemed. Grandpa looked at Grandma. Grandma looked at Grandpa. Then Grandma gently put down her fork.
She asked me, very carefully, what exactly I had seen.
I smiled, certain that I was about to explain everything and end the strange silence.
I had no idea that my innocent answer was about to make the entire dinner table explode with laughter.
