The Moving Truck Arrived At Ten, But The County Folder Was Already Open And Waiting

I knew something was wrong the moment my mother called and told me to come home immediately. Her voice sounded rehearsed, almost too calm, but beneath it was an urgency I had learned not to ignore. When I arrived, a moving truck was already parked in the driveway. My sister Bethany stood near the front door with Marcus, while several strangers carried boxes through the hallway. My mother told me they were simply “helping organize things,” but the boxes had my name written across them. My childhood photographs, books, clothes, and even the small wooden keepsakes my grandmother had left me were being packed as if my life had already been erased from the house.

 

 

I demanded an explanation, but nobody gave me a straight answer. Then I noticed Patricia standing beside the kitchen counter with a folder in her hands. She introduced herself as the social worker assigned to complete the final home assessment for Maya and Caleb, the two children I had been fighting to adopt. Suddenly, everything made sense—and became far more dangerous. My mother had apparently decided that this was her chance to force me out before Patricia completed the visit. But she had made one mistake. She had not realized I had brought something with me that could change everything.
