The Keyless Lock And The Camera Feed That Ended My Family’s Assumption That My Home Was Theirs

For years, my family treated my downtown apartment like it belonged to everyone except me. Vanessa, my sister, had become especially comfortable making plans with my home without asking. This time, she had apparently copied a key, checked my custody schedule, and invited eight people to stay there while I was supposed to be away with my son, Owen. I had already told her three times—in writing—that she did not have permission. Still, she arrived with Marcus, his parents Susan and Robert, and the others expecting me to give them the entry code.

 

 

 

 

Instead, I started a video call so my entire family could hear me say it clearly. “I told you no. There is no code. There will be no code. You need to leave.” Vanessa immediately accused me of humiliating her. But then I turned the camera toward the hallway and explained that the building had security cameras too. I had already contacted the property manager about the unauthorized key. Then Susan looked at Vanessa and quietly said, “I think we should go. I didn’t know he’d said no.”
