Nathan had always believed he was a good husband because he paid the bills, came home every night, and never raised his voice. What he refused to notice was how often Isabelle went quiet around his mother. Gloria had a talent for turning small intrusions into family obligations. She criticized Isabelle’s cooking, opened cabinets without asking, borrowed things and forgot to return them, and somehow always knew what was happening in their marriage before Nathan did.
Whenever Isabelle complained, Nathan reached for the same excuse: That’s just Mom. She means well. Isabelle stopped arguing. Instead, she began locking drawers, changing passwords, and keeping her purse beside her whenever Gloria visited.
Then, one Saturday morning, Isabelle stood in their kitchen holding a bank statement. Her face was pale, but her voice was calm. “Nathan,” she said, “I need you to look at this.” He glanced at the page, expecting another argument about his mother. Instead, he saw a list of purchases Isabelle swore she had never made. Before he could answer, her phone buzzed. A message from the bank appeared on the screen: Your card has been declined due to insufficient funds. Isabelle stared at it, then slowly looked toward the door.
