My mother’s message was shorter than her last, and colder. It read: Come to the house tonight and bring the paperwork, or you’ll regret embarrassing this family. I set the phone face down on the kitchen table, beside the folder that had been waiting there for weeks. Because that folder was the one thing my parents had forgotten about, the one that predated the birthday, the letter, and every insult they had ever thrown at my marriage. My husband sat down across from me as I opened the folder. “You’re really going to use it?” he asked quietly.
