For years, Margaret had believed patience and forgiveness could eventually help her son Tyler change. She had protected him from consequences so many times that she had almost forgotten where helping ended and enabling began. But after Tyler crossed a serious line, she finally told him he had to leave. “I love you,” she said calmly, “but loving you does not mean allowing you to disrespect me.” Her attorney, Ms. Harrison, then revealed something even more troubling: Tyler had applied for a loan using Margaret’s house as collateral, despite not owning the property. When Margaret demanded to know why, Tyler admitted that he owed people money.

The man eventually disappeared, leaving behind a notebook filled with names, dates, and financial figures. Margaret’s name appeared inside it, along with photographs of her house taken at night. Then the detective found an even more disturbing clue: an attempted ownership transfer involving Margaret’s property. She had never signed it. As Margaret tried to understand who was behind everything, an unknown number sent her a message that made her turn toward her former husband, Richard.
