Monica stared at the gnome and muttered that it was ugly. She nudged it with her slipper, then pushed harder when it wouldn’t move. A thin line suddenly snapped tight behind it. Before she could understand what was happening, a container tipped over and dumped bright pink paint directly onto her head. It covered her hair, yoga clothes, and slippers. Her scream brought lights on throughout the neighborhood, and within moments, neighbors appeared outside to see what had happened. I stepped onto my porch with my phone recording. Monica immediately accused me of deliberately attacking her and demanded that everyone turn off their cameras.

Instead, I calmly reminded her that she had been using my electricity after I had explicitly told her to stop. She tried to argue that she wasn’t stealing anything, but the neighbors had already heard enough. Then Frank, another neighbor, mentioned that Monica had also borrowed his ladder and kept it for three months. Suddenly, the issue wasn’t just about a little electricity or pink paint. Other neighbors began admitting that Monica had taken advantage of them too. For the first time, I wasn’t the only person willing to speak up. Monica stood in my driveway, covered in pink, while everyone finally saw the pattern I had tolerated for months.

I thought the embarrassment would be the end of it, but two weeks later, my neighbor’s landlord came to my door. He had seen the video, but he told me that wasn’t why he had made his decision. After investigating further, he discovered Monica was behind on several utility payments and had made unauthorized repairs to the property. Her lease was ending the following month, and he had decided not to renew it. The paint had turned out to be only the beginning of consequences for behavior that had apparently been going on far beyond my driveway.

A month later, I watched Monica load the last of her belongings into a moving truck. She never looked toward my house. My garden gnome was finally back beside my mailbox, exactly where my late husband had originally placed it. Sitting on my porch with a glass of iced tea, I realized that I hadn’t really been keeping the peace all those years—I had simply been staying silent. My husband used to remind me that kindness wasn’t the same thing as silence. Finally, I understood. I could be kind without allowing people to take advantage of me. And sometimes, standing up for yourself is the most peaceful thing you can do.
