The Husband Handed A Sealed Envelope Instead Of A Check At The Divorce He Was Supposed To Lose

Judge Fairbanks opened the envelope himself. He read the first page without saying a word, then slowly turned to the second. I watched his expression change from impatience to something much colder. He looked at Rosalind, then back at the report. “Mrs. Bramwell,” he finally said, “why does this report say the youngest child belongs to his brother?” A gasp swept through the courtroom. Rosalind’s lawyer immediately stopped writing, and the confident smirk she had worn throughout our eight-month divorce disappeared.

 

 

 

The report was clear. Elliot and Jolene were my biological children. Wyatt, the six-year-old I had raised, comforted, and taught to ride a bicycle, was not. The genetic markers identified my younger brother Colin as his biological father. Colin had lived in our guest room for two years during what Rosalind had once called a “rough patch.” Until seventy-two hours earlier, I had never imagined that period meant anything more. Now the truth was sitting on the judge’s desk, and everything Rosalind had demanded from me was about to change.
